Keeping young people safe on Depop
We are updating our policies. This updated policy will come into effect from September 6th 2021.
We work hard to keep Depop a safe and inclusive space for all of our users who are buying and selling unique fashion. We are mindful that a large percentage of our users are between the ages of 13 and 17, which is why we prioritise the safety of the youngest members of our community when it comes to our policies. As the Depop community includes both adults and children, we expect all users to behave in a way that is safe and appropriate for all ages.
Depop does not allow any content or behaviour that puts our community at risk. This includes activity which may be harmful toward minors and/or is not appropriate for our younger users. For example, we do not allow adult content, nudity, weapons, alcohol or tobacco to be listed on Depop. Depop proactively moderates the app to detect and take action on prohibited content and behaviour in accordance with our policies.
If you encounter content or behaviour that is unsafe, inappropriate or may put users at risk of harm please report it to us via the app or using our contact form. If you suspect something’s not right, let us know - we’ll look into it and make sure our policies are being followed and that our community is safe.
Keeping safe on Depop - guidelines for under 18s
If you are a Depop user and under 18, make sure you read and familiarise yourself with our Community Guidelines to keep yourself safe whilst using the app. We also recommend you look at these policies with your parent/s or guardian/s.
Most importantly we urge you to follow these safety principles:
1. Only buy and sell using Depop’s payment system
You’ll need your parent and/or guardian’s permission to buy and sell on Depop using our protected payment system, either to connect a PayPal account so you can list items and sell, or to verify your Depop Payment account via Stripe so you can cash out your sold item funds.
Never send money to another user privately or meet them in person, even if the seller is insisting you do so. Don’t give out information such as your PayPal account or bank details to another user so they can send you money privately either - buying and selling outside of Depop’s payment system is against the rules, because it’s unsafe and can lead to you losing your money or your item.
2. Protect yourself and others
Depop is first and foremost a marketplace where buyers and sellers can search for, meet, chat and purchase items. We want users to conduct their business in a safe and secure environment which is why we do not allow posts or messages that promote or encourage:
- Self harm
- Eating disorders
We understand the importance of and need for self expression, but this should not trigger physical, mental or emotional harm for others.
If you come across this content, please report it via the app or using our contact form. If we discover such activity taking place we will take down the offending content but may also contact the seller to explain why we have taken down the listing and recommend they seek professional help.
3. Behave appropriately
Doing harm on Depop is not just about what you may do to yourself but also what you may do to others. We do not allow bullying or harassment of any kind on Depop whether you are an adult or child, whether on public messages, comments, listings or in chat. It will not be tolerated. We take this very seriously and it could result in permanent removal from Depop if you engage in such behaviour.
4. Safe imagery
If you are under the age of 18, your protection and safety online is of the utmost importance to us. For this reason, If you are between the ages of 13 and 17 you are not allowed to post photographs of yourself in:
- See through/mesh clothing
Separately, we do have a strict policy which prohibits nudity on Depop for all ages. If you do see anyone posting listings with nudity then please report it via the app or using our contact form. If we discover that a user is in breach of our nudity policy then we will take down the listing.
5. Keep your personal information private
Only use Depop’s messaging system to talk to buyers and sellers, and don’t message people privately outside of the app or agree to meet them in person. Giving out your personal information such as phone number, email address or social media handles can be really unsafe - don’t take the risk. Keep it in-app.
6. Got an issue? Let us know
We’re here to help with any concerns or questions you have when using Depop. Whether it’s an item that shouldn’t be on the app, another user who makes you feel uncomfortable or unsafe, or you’ve got an issue with an item you’ve bought or sold, report the issue to us and we’ll get back to you - 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
If you have encountered content or behaviour which you believe breaks our Abuse, Bullying & Harassment policy on the app, please let us know by reporting the item or user through the app. We’ll investigate and take action in accordance with this policy.
